A Custom Carved, Handmade Slingshot

Hand Carved Fishscale on a Handmade Slingshot.

001

I’ve completed hand carvings on many different custom and handmade items in the past, but this project was the first, and possibly only job of this type for me.   My client contacted me and wanted to finish off his handmade slingshot with some Fishscale carving,

It was made, as all slingshots should be, from a Y-shaped piece of wood for strength.  The wood he used was Butternut and it was just beautiful.   It was custom shaped to his hand and the fishscale was needed so the grip would not slip off his palm.   It has a beautiful semi-gloss finish that makes it, with the addition of the carving, a one-of-kind masterpiece.

The slingshot was already completed and ready to fire when it arrived, as you can see.   I had to be careful and protect the surgical band he used for the sling itself while I carved.  Just like on the pistol grip on some rifles, I had to carve around a palm swell shown in the photo to the left above.   You can see the back of the slingshot is shaped perfectly for his fingers.  I say that because it did not fit my hand at all.

If you have a different project that you think could be augmented by custom carving, drop me an email.  Lets figure it out.

Custom Carved Shotgun Trio Update

Three Squirrel Guns for Three Sons

This is an update on the three stock carvings I completed for a client for his three sons.  Christmas presents of Family Heirloom shotguns.   I received a photo of the stocks put on the shotguns and I wanted to share it.

I have to admit, I was really anxious while waiting to hear about these Christmas presents and how the boys liked them.   I’m so glad they sent me a photo so we could see them complete.  Here is what I received:

” Merry Christmas Lance!!  Here’s a pic of the shotguns assembled. The boys love them, Thanks again!! “

The Squirrels better watch out with this Band of Brothers out in the field.    Is this something you would like for your children or grandchildren?   Email me and let’s talk about it.

Lee Larson, An Artist at Heart

A Tribute to my Father

I lost my Dad two days after Thanksgiving this year at the age of 90.   He made me the Artist and the person I am today.

He is on the left with his arm around his Wiemaraner Zeze in this photo taken after a weekend Montana Deer/Pronghorn hunt, circa early 1950s.

The link below is to the article I wrote about him.    Thanks to those who have time to read it.

Hand Carved Heirloom Golden Boy

Custom Carved Tribute to a Father

 Henry Golden Boy .22

In my experience, the two most common reasons for a client to want a gunstock carved are…

      * Memories…  A special hunt, for example.

      * In Memory of… a Family member or four legged hunting partner.

The latter was the reason for my most recent commission.  My client wanted the stock for a Henry Golden Boy stock carved as a present for her husband.   The photo above shows that rifle.    It was to be a memorial and tribute to his Father.

She mentioned that his Father had been referred to as an “Oak Tree” so she wanted Oak leaves on the stock and a sentiment carved in the stock also.  During our communication for planning the design she also said she liked the idea of a cross in the carving.  I suggested an old wooden cross on a hill and she liked that idea.

This Stock needed to be done for Christmas so I told her I would get it to her well before the holiday.   When I started working on this carving, I couldn’t put it down.   I love carving leaves, but it was this tribute to a Father that really moved me.

Carving this Walnut tribute made me think about my own Father and I wanted this to be a special Family Heirloom.  I wanted it to be a carving that would make my own Father proud if he saw it.

A Custom Carved Shotgun Trio

Custom Carved Matching Shotguns for Three Sons

This is a commission done for a client that wanted three matching shotguns carved for his boys.  They were all the same model and gauge – H & R Pardner model single shots in 20 gauge.   He wanted them personalized for each son.

The client mentioned that the boys like to go Squirrel hunting so I suggested a squirrel carving on each stock along with the boy’s name.  I told him I could make each squirrel carving different so each could really know their shotgun from the others.  I really enjoy working on a gift for a young hunter.   I like to believe that the carving will make it special and will help build a lifelong love of the outdoors.

The squirrels were carved in the laminate wood stocks, three different squirrels for three different young hunters.   The were carved in an inlaid style and were stained a dark Walnut color after completion since, the wood is white when carved.

I finished their carvings with several coats of Birchwood Casey TruOil finish and they are now ready for Christmas.   Following that, these individual Family Heirlooms will be ready for years of use and years of memories in the field.

Would you like something like this on your child’s or grandchild’s new firearm, email me and we can design your own Family Heirloom.
